Catholic Priest, Teacher Sentenced in Sex Abuse Case-
- Update of 9/4/12 article

A judge has sentenced a Roman Catholic priest to six to 12 years in prison and a former teacher to eight to 16 years in a sex-abuse case that brought down a Philadelphia church official.

In January, a Philadelphia jury returned guilty verdicts on child-sex charges against the two men.

The verdict supports accounts by a 24-year-old policeman's son that he was sexually abused by the Rev. Charles Engelhardt between 1998 and 1999 and Bernard Shero, a former sixth-grade teacher, in 2000 when he was an altar boy.

The victim's 2009 complaint provided the hook for Philadelphia prosecutors to bring the nation's first criminal charges against a U.S. church official for allegedly covering up sexual abuse by priests.

The sexual abuse complaints led to the conviction of Monsignor William Lynn, who had transferred a priest named Avery to the parish despite concerns he was a pedophile.

Parents sue Coconut Creek preschool following sex abuse allegations

The parents of a 4-year-old girl who was allegedly molested by a music teacher at Discovery Pre-School Center in Coconut Creek are now suing the school claiming child safety was not a priority for administrators.

The lawsuit comes about a week after music teacher Olakunle Omomowo, 38, known at the school as “Mr. Ola”, was arrested on two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of two female students at the school.

He could face life in prison if convicted.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday, the parents of the child claim Omomowo often was left alone with the children without teacher supervision. The lawsuit claims Omomowo then fondled the girl multiple times under the pretext of playing a game. On May 20, the child told her mother that the teacher fondled her, according to the lawsuit.

The family's attorney, Jeffrey Herman, wrote in the lawsuit that Omomowo may have sexually abused multiple children at the school, both boys and girls.

"As of the present date, at least four children at Discovery have disclosed sexual abuse by Mr. Ola," Herman said.

Herman added that school administrators tried to minimize the accusations and failed to promptly tell other parents about the alleged sexual abuse. The identities of the parents and the children were not included in the lawsuit.

American teacher held in Shanghai over allegations of child sex abuse

An American teacher at an elite French school in Shanghai has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting at least seven children, school officials and parents said yesterday.

The Shanghai kindergarten teacher, a 32-year-old surnamed McMahon, was seized by police last month after seven families filed formal accusations against him, alleging sexual abuse and rape of students of both sexes, several parents said.

A former instructor at the school, also an American, was extradited to the US on similar charges.

Education authorities have stepped up supervision of foreign teachers since April following two child sex scandals, in Beijing and Nanjing . Local schools on the mainland have also been mired in a series of child molestation cases exposed recently.

The second teacher, a friend of the first, was "extradited by Chinese authorities to the US in December 2012 following an investigation into sexual touching and violence against minors", the school said in an e-mail.

From 2005 until last year he worked alternately at the French and German schools, which share a campus. He left the French school in 2011 and its management said his alleged actions took place during individual classes at a private home when he was no longer on staff.

Ex-principal sentenced in sex case

A former public middle school principal charged with a string of sexual abuse was sentenced to three months in prison and 12 years of probation for abuse that occurred four years ago.

The man, Ronald B. Anderson, 34, allegedly met the victims, who were teenage boys, at his church.

Anderson, former principal at Kennedy Middle School in Antioch, was convicted in January by a Davidson County jury of four counts of sexual battery by an authority figure.

Police arrested Anderson in March 2009 after prosecutors charged him with sexually abusing two teenage boys, whom he took under his wing at the Royal Life International Church in Madison. Anderson had given them rides, treated them to dinner and become a mentor of sorts, according to court testimony.

School officials said Anderson underwent a background search prior to his hiring. Before starting at Kennedy, Anderson was assistant principal at Gra-Mar Middle School in Madison. School officials said they do not believe any students were abused during Anderson's tenure.

Former High School Principal Sentenced in Child Sex Abuse Case

Robert Paul Patton, the 44-year-old publisher of LGBTQ blog FabulousPDX.com, was sentenced to two years in prison Monday after pleading no contest to the attempted first-degree sexual abuse of a 12-year-old boy, according to the Oregonian.

The former Sherwood High School principal was arrested on the sexual abuse charges on June 13, and again on July 18 after police allegedly found child pornography on his computer, Prosecutor Ryan Lufkin told PQ Monthly last August.

According to the prosecution’s probable cause affidavit, “… [Patton] slept in the same bed as [the child] and another male named Jonny. [The child] reported that he gave the defendant a hand job. Jonny, when interviewed, confirmed that the defendant and [the child] were sleeping in the bed together and kissing. [The child] reported that this occurred in the summer of 2011.”

The Oregonian reports that the victim testified against Patton and four other men accused of abusing him and that the other offenders received a range of sentences from probation to 25 years in prison.

This was not Patton’s first charge related to child sexual abuse. He was convicted in 2003 of two counts of sexual abuse in the third degree involving a 16-year-old boy and one count of possessing child pornography and sentenced to six months in prison and one year in a halfway house. He is a registered sex offender.

South Australian school teacher and his partner charged with sexually abusing her daughters

An Adelaide school teacher sexually abused and photographed two girls aged three and 10 while their mother participated and their brother was forced to watch, a court has heard.

The teacher, 36, appeared in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court today charged with multiple counts of producing, possessing and disseminating child pornography, as well as rape and unlawful sexual intercourse.

Prosecutors urged the court not to release the teacher on bail, saying he was a sexual predator that placed the entire community at risk, and that he was now likely a flight risk, given the seriousness of the charges he was facing.

They said he came to police attention after pretending to be a child on the internet to engage in conversation with young people.

They said his computer was seized in November and, following a long and complicated analysis, pornographic images were located.

The images allegedly depict the man and his partner engaged in sexual acts with the partner's 10-year-old daughter.

Other images allegedly depict the partner's three-year-old daughter while her older brother is present.

Prosecutors said the teacher's partner, 35, had made admissions to taking part in the sexually explicit behavior and identified herself and her children as the people in the photographs.

Teacher sentenced to prison for sexual abuse of child

A physical education teacher was convicted Monday of continuous sexual abuse of a young child.

Deleon was a physical education teacher at Travis Elementary School in San Marcos when the abuse took place. Police learned of the abuse from a recording of a sexually explicit telephone conversation between Deleon and the victim which was discovered by the victim’s mother.

The abuse occurred from June 3, 2011 through August 27, 2011 at the victim’s family’s residence at Gary Job Corps in Caldwell County and at Deleon's home in Martindale, according to a press release from the Caldwell County District Attorney's Office.

Suit Filed Against Norman Schools After Aid Arrested For Molestation

Christopher Flores was arrested after court papers say he admitted to inappropriately touching a nine-year-old boy. Parents file a new lawsuit against Norman Public Schools after a former special education aid is arrested on charges of child molestation.

Even though the suspected abuse didn't happen at school, the new suit alleges district administrators knew the man was dangerous.

Since this came to light, the school district has maintained that although some parents complained of physical abuse, there was never any evidence of sexual misconduct. But this newest lawsuit suggests the school investigated the aid during his first year at the school after he invited a 7-year-old student to spend the night at his house.

"Not only did he take this particular student home, but other students as well in the middle of the day," said Alex Bendar, who is representing that student in the suit filed late Tuesday.

Bendar also represented five other parents who sued the school back in 2007. That suit was settled, as was another one filed in 2011 by another family and another in 2012 by two former students.

All allege they told the school Flores was physically abusing kids, but he was kept on staff.  Flores was arrested last week for molesting a 9-year-old boy.

"Aside of the issues of sexual molestation that first came up , there were issues of physical and psychological abuse over the years that would have alerted Norman Public Schools to take him away from children," said Bendar.

Former Christian school teacher accused of molesting boys
- Update of 1/15/13 article

A former youth worker and teacher at a Christian school in Gaithersburg has been charged with molesting teenage boys during the 1980s and '90s.

Nathaniel Morales, 55, has been indicted in Montgomery County Circuit Court on 10 counts of sexually abusing four boys under his care.

Morales, now a Pentecostal bishop in Las Vegas, has a hearing scheduled for Friday .

Police began investigating in 2009 after a man came forward to say that Morales had performed sex acts on him beginning when he was about 14 years old.

Morales was a member of Covenant Life Church and a teacher at the victim's school, the now defunct Montgomery County Covenant Life Academy. Morales held Bible studies and sleep overs at his Germantown apartment where the victim said much of the molestation occurred.

The victim's father told detectives that he talked with pastors about Morales, but there were "concerns of tarnished reputations," and no police report was made.

Police interviewed two pastors who confirmed that they talked to Morales about the allegations that he was abusing boys.

One pastor, Ernest Boisvert, told police that "normally the church would appeal to the accused to stop his criminal behavior and then, should it not stop, they would alert people that the person is not acting in a Christian manner," according to police.

Boisvert said he "took his cues from the families of the victims," who did not indicate they wanted to notify police, charging documents said.

Police said they then discovered three more victims, who all told similar stories of Morales sneaking into their bedrooms at night and molesting them.  The alleged abuse occurred at the boys' homes, on camping trips and at the school.

Another father, when questioned by police, told investigators that he had confronted Morales, and Morales asked for the father's forgiveness. The father told police that Morales confessed, and he forgave the man. The father did not notify police.

NY religious school rabbi faces sex abuse charges of three former students

A rabbi at a religious school in New York's ultra-orthodox Jewish community has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing three teenage boys from the ultra-Orthodox yeshiva where he once taught.

Yoel Malik, 33, a well-regarded member of the Satmar Hasidic sect, was arrested on 28 charges ranging from sexual abuse to forcible touching, police said.

He lured two of the underaged victims to Brooklyn hotels, according to sources.

The incidents occurred between March 2012 and last week.

Malik’s family ran the since-closed yeshiva, a small private facility for troubled kids. The operation shut down over financial problems.

The allegations arose through an anonymous tip to a confidential hotline.

The arrest came a week after a Satmar counselor was sentenced to 103 years behind bars for his repeated sexual abuse of a teenage girl sent to him for help.

L.A. Teacher accused of molesting 20 children had prior claims made against him

In yet another embarrassment for one of the nation’s largest public school systems, Robert Pimentel, 57, a fourth grade teacher is in custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting 20 of his female students and one adult.

A previous report of sexual misconduct against Pimentel occurred four years ago at the school, and another complaint was made eight years ago at another elementary school where both a female principal and Pimentel had worked, said district Superintendent John Deasy

"My determination was that she was previously mishandling other complaints," Deasy said. "My intent was to fire them."

The district never got the chance because both Pimentel and the principal retired after the allegations surfaced last March.

"You can't fire someone who doesn't work for you," Deasy said.

Police said they will review the principal's failure to report those previous allegations.

It took nearly a year to bring charges against Pimentel and the investigation began just weeks after the arrest of another Los Angeles elementary school teacher, Mark Berndt, who has pleaded not guilty to 23 counts of lewd conduct involving students.

Following that scandal, the district mandated that parents be notified within 72 hours of a report of a suspected abuser, and that each case be reviewed by several human resources staffers to ensure it is reported to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

District officials vowed to investigate molestation claims and move quickly to remove suspected teachers from classrooms while investigations are ongoing, which apparently occurred in Pimentel's case.

Police were contacted in March by the parents of five students who said Pimentel had touched their children inappropriately. District officials immediately removed him from campus and notifications were sent out.

Mo. Board of Education president resigns amid allegations of sexually abusing a minor

The Missouri Board of Education president has resigned following allegations of sexually abusing a minor.

Stan Archie, who also serves as pastor of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in Kansas City, resigned Friday. He was appointed to the state board in 2006.

A lawsuit filed alleges that Archie made lewd comments about his sexual prowess after he began counseling a 15-year-old female member of the congregation, who is now 23. It was the second such lawsuit filed against Archie in a little more than a year.

Archie is also accused of encouraging the teenage girl to act promiscuously and report her experiences to him, often by Skype. He also allegedly told the girl he used to be a pimp and viewed himself as her surrogate father.

The lawsuit claims that Archie told her that he was "next to God," and that the sexual acts were "a Holy thing."

The church was also named as a defendant.

Civil lawsuit filed against Rock Church Academy over allegations of child sex abuse

An investigation has uncovered new information about allegations of child sex abuse involving a former Rock Church Academy school teacher.

Attorney Stephen Estey confirmed he filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of four alleged child victims. The lawsuit claims that the Rock Academy failed to protect the children and violated a legal responsibility to report suspicions of abuse as soon as they became aware.

Latisha and Mel Zamora say their daughter was molested by the teacher in a Rock Church Academy classroom. She was in the first grade.

The teacher's name is not being revealed, because he has not been criminally charged.

The Zamoras say their daughter was assaulted during "movie time." The same story was reported by Vanessa and Jose Rodriguez, who are also part of the civil suit filed by Estey. The families are angry and forever scarred.

Vanessa Rodriguez said, "She explained the teacher put his hands up her shirt and he would rub her legs and the inside of her legs and bottom and hold her tight and wouldn't let her go. This happened every Friday on movie day."

The families both report that a teacher walked in on the abuse in a dark classroom, nearly a year before the accused teacher was terminated.

"My daughter said the teacher that walked in was so startled the girls fell off his lap and the teacher felt it was not right and was uncomfortable and reported it to the school," said Latisha Zamora.

A spokeswoman for the Rock Church released the following statement on Monday evening:

"The Rock Church has not seen a copy of any civil complaint.  We understand there continues to be an ongoing investigation by the authorities and we do not know the status of that investigation, but will continue to cooperate as we have from the beginning...”

In February 2010, after reports of a breach of Academy protocols by the teacher, the church confirmed the behavior and his employment was promptly terminated. The church also immediately forwarded the information to the San Diego Police Department."

The teacher in question also worked at Horizon Christian Academy in San Diego.

Former Riverdale Baptist soccer coach convicted of child sex abuse

A Seat Pleasant man could get more than 100 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a girl on the soccer team he once coached.

Charles Vasser of Seat Pleasant was found guilty Jan. 7 of five counts of child sexual abuse, each of which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Daneeka Cotton gave the verdict in the bench trial, meaning the case was decided by a judge instead of a jury.

From October 2008 until July 2009, Vasser sexually abused a teenage girl from Riverdale Baptist School, a private school in Upper Marlboro, according to the statement from the state’s attorney office. Vasser, 35, had been the coach of the then-15-year-old girl’s soccer team when the sexual acts began, according to John Erzen, a spokesman for the county’s state’s attorney office. Over a 10-month time frame, Vasser had multiple sexual interactions that varied from sexual intercourse to kissing with the victim, according to a statement from the state’s attorney office.

“This would also occur in his vehicle, at different locations, after practice on the way to drop her off at her residence,” according to police charging documents.

Police arrested Vasser on June 7, after the girl came forward and told police of the abuse, Erzen said.

Teacher arrested for child sex assault while babysitting

Police in Westport have arrested a high school teacher for sexually assaulting a minor. They say the 67-year-old man was babysitting the child when the abuse happened.

Victor Corso does not have children of his own. The 4-year-old victim's family has known him for 12 years.

He's been a teacher in the science department for a number of years at Norwalk's Brien McMahon High School.

Now, we're learning 67 year-old Victor Corso is also a babysitter to a four year-old boy. That babysitting job, inside Corso's Westport home has gotten him into trouble. He's accused of sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.

Court papers say the victim's mother realized something was horribly wrong when she was dressing him on Christmas. She says her son kept making references to his private parts and how he's seen Uncle Vic's and touched his.

The four year old also tells his mother he and Uncle Vic would sleep together in the home and jump up and down naked in the bathtub.

A few days after the mother called the Department of Children and Families, Corso was arrested.

In court today, he was ordered to have no contact with the victim and his family. He's also not allowed to have contact with children under 18 unsupervised. His lawyer was concerned this could be an issue as many of Corso's students are under 18.

A court date has not been set, and the case has been sealed.

MN, Bemidji - 12/10/2012
Longtime teacher and coach accused of sexual abuse

More has been learned about an investigation into a high-profile coach and teacher accused of sexually abusing multiple children.

It was a case brought to officials two years ago, but nothing was ever done. Now things are once again being investigated in Bemidji, Minnesota.

It was at Central Elementary school in Bemidji, Minnesota where the allegations of abuse took place.

On March 7, 2011, John Wangberg's school computer and camera were confiscated by the Bemidji police department, and upon examination the devices were found to contain 12 images which might be categorized as child erotica, yet Wangberg was never charged.

Now more victims have come forward. One victim told a mental health worker on December 3, 2012, that Mr. Wangberg had her in his office and she had taken her shirt off. The victim never released the information until now because she did not want to get in trouble.

It was these statements which allowed the police to conduct a search warrant on Wangberg’s house.  Police say the investigation has been given to the County Attorney, and it is up to them to determine if charges will be filed.

One former teacher has already been arrested and more arrests could follow. The boys are alleged to have been sexually abused while they were being handed corporal punishment.

Some incidents are alleged to have happened in classrooms while others are said to have occurred at the homes of teachers after pupils had been invited back for ‘extra lessons’.

It is understood four former teachers have been named by the accusers and their friends.

No current staff at the all-boys school are being investigated.

The 63-year-old arrested man is a retired teacher who now works as a church minister.

Ex-Utah principal arrested in child sex abuse

A former principal at an award-winning charter school in Utah has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing boys over the past 35 years, according to authorities.  Charles Weber, 65, faces six felony counts involving the sexual abuse of two boys. But authorities fear there may be more victims considering Weber was an educator for 40 years.

"He had access to so many children for so long," said Paul Murphy, spokesman for the Utah Attorney General's Office. "The potential is frightening."

A joint state and federal investigation began when a 48-year-old man told the FBI that he had been abused in the mid-1970s while he was an 11-year-old student of Weber's.

Weber acknowledged to FBI agents that he had sexually abused "several young boys" over the past 35 years, according to court documents.  Weber said he most recently sexually abused a 15-year-old boy from January through April 2012, court documents show. The teenager, who is a relative of Weber's, had been a student at the Soldier Hollow Charter School in Midway, where Weber was principal.

After Weber found out about the investigation, he fled south, court documents show. He was arrested Monday afternoon near the town of St. George by Washington County sheriff's deputies. He was booked into county jail on a $1 million bond. He was being transferred Tuesday to Wasatch County Jail, in the northern part of the state where his warrant was issued.

CA, Chula Vista - 12/1/2012
Elementary school teacher arrested- accused of luring children online

A local elementary school teacher was arrested Friday morning on felony charges involving allegedly luring children online.

Suspect John Kinloch, 41, is a first grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista. He’s been teaching for the past 14 years.

Federal agents believe the veteran teacher lured children online in order to obtain nude pictures of minors.

On Friday, the Chula Vista Elementary School District handed out 900 letters informing parents of Kinloch’s arrest. The letter reassured parents that none of their students were targeted and none of the alleged crimes were committed on campus.

"There's nothing in the individual's file to indicate anything of this nature, thus [we’re feeling] a sense of surprise and concern and shock," said Anthony Millican of the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force says Kinloch posed as a 13-year-old girl online.

He has allegedly been in contact with boys between the ages of 12 and 16, getting them to send him nude photographs and videos.

In addition, Kinloch is accused of selling or sending the obscene materials.

He’s scheduled to appear in court and face a judge on Dec. 7.

Ex-Highlands Ranch teacher and coach charged with thirty child sex assault counts

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Richard Johnson is a former eighth grade teacher at Rocky Heights Middle School, as well as a onetime basketball coach at Rock Canyon High School; both facilities are in Highlands Ranch.

After months of investigation, detectives filed a case with the 18th Judicial District DA's office suggesting thirty charges against Johnson, including multiple counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, sexual exploitation of a child and enticement of a child.

At this point, the DCSO references only one victim -- a former student. But reps stress that the investigation is continuing. As such, no additional details are being released right now.

Johnson turned himself in to authorities and is currently free on a $50,000 bond. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to phone Detective Dea Aragon at 303-814-7131.

Teacher expected to face more sex abuse charges

The lawyer for a Far North teacher who sexually abused a dozen boys says he will be facing more charges of abusing other boys.

James Parker is in custody awaiting sentence after admitting 49 charges of indecent assault and unlawful sexual connection with boys aged 11 to 13 from 2004 until 2012.

Police have been investigating at Pamapuria School where Parker was deputy head until his arrest in July this year and also more widely.

Parker also taught at Oturu School in the late 1990s, where there were complaints about his behaviour with boys but were not properly followed up, and in England for three years until 2003.

The ministry's report on how Parker was able to prey on young boys in his care was made public on Friday and found that Pamapuria School failed to protect students despite a police warning about him.

Larry Forbes, the Commissioner now running Pamapuria School, says Parker got away with his offending primarily because he was a master manipulator, but says the report found there were actions that the school could have taken to protect its students.

Parker was stood down three years ago while police investigated complaints against him, but was re-instated at the school after the complaints were withdrawn, the report says.

After his reinstatement, police warned the school that he should not be allowed to be alone with pupils or have them to stay at his home.

Auckland barrister Robin Arthur investigated the matter for the ministry and says there is no evidence that principal Stephen Hovell knew of reports that Parker was showering and sleeping with boys at his previous school.

However, he says Mr. Hovell was warned by police and Child, Youth and Family in 2009 that there were concerns about Parker.

Mr. Arthur's report says Mr. Hovell limited details available to the trustees, there was no independent investigation by the school and Parker was never formally told to end his out-of-school contact with children.

The report says the school's response was overly focused on the Parker's welfare and he used his position of power to go on molesting pupils and escape detection.

Mr. Forbes says Pamapuria School has begun implementing the recommendations in the report, including more rigorous appointment processes.

Calif principal guilty of failing to report abuse
- Update to 10/5/2012 article

A California jury convicted a former San Jose principal on Monday of failing to report suspected sexual abuse of a child by a teacher.

Lyn Vijayendran, former principal of O.B. Whaley Elementary School, was found guilty of the misdemeanor after jurors deliberated for two days.

The charge came after Vijayendran was told last fall of a possible molestation and she determined through her own investigation that no crime had been committed, authorities said. Police later found four more girls at the school that were believed to have been molested.

The law requires principals, teachers and others who come into contact with children to report suspected child abuse.

The teacher, 35-year-old Craig Chandler, was arrested in January and has been charged with five counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14, involving five children. Authorities say a crime lab found his semen on a classroom chair.

Chandler has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is in jail pending his own trial and could face a maximum sentence of 75 years to life if convicted.

Papadokas was hired as a teacher in the Uintah School District in August 1997, according to Lee Gagon, the district's director of human resources. He became assistant principal at Vernal Middle School before the beginning of the current academic year.

Papadakos remains in jail. His bail is set at $150,000.

Lawsuit: 8-year-old child porn victim abused by third grade teacher, filmed at Hildebrand Elementary School

The family of a young girl, who was the victim of child porn when her 3rd grade teacher abused and filmed her, has filed a lawsuit against her abuser, the school district and the school's guidance counselor.

According to the lawsuit, the then 8-year-old victim, who is only referenced as "Jane Doe," says that she went to school officials while her teacher was abusing her and was dismissed.

Fifty-four-year-old Michael Andrew Alexander, a 3rd grade teacher at Hildebran Elementary School, was nabbed as part of an international child porn ring that was broken up in Spain in mid-June.  He was sentenced to 49.5 years behind bars.

Investigators discovered some videos which involved young girls wearing Hildebran Elementary t-shirts, during the child porn ring bust. The videos were then traced to Alexander, who was a teacher at the school for seven years.

The lawsuit claims these sexual abuses took place at Hildebran Elementary and that school computers were used to "upload, download, copy and distribute sexually deviant images of the children to a worldwide audience of sexual degenerate and child-pornography enterprises."

The school's guidance counselor, Linda Bradshaw, is named in the lawsuit as well.  The victim claims that she went to Bradshaw and was scolded and dismissed.

"Bradshaw scolded Jane Doe to 'stop lying' and commanded her to go back to Alexander's class."

After telling Bradshaw about the abuse, "Jane Doe" continued to be sexually abused and filmed by Alexander at the school, the lawsuit states.

Ten other people, listed as John Roes 1-10, are named on the lawsuit as employed by, or associated with, the Burke County Public Schools. The suit claims that all ten of these people knew about Alexander's "misconduct and disregarded their duties" to report the incidents.

Sheriff’s investigators who looked into the case in the beginning said they found no indication of anyone not reporting the abuse as soon as they heard about it.

The lawsuit also claims there were “as many as 50 victims” of Alexander’s crimes during his time in Burke County and they believe he had victims in McDowell County, where he worked before 2001.

SC high school coach charged in sex abuse case

A coach at a Chesterfield County high school sexually abused two middle school students in Oconee County more than a decade ago, authorities said.

Richard Gardner III, 39, was arrested and charged with 11 counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor, and 13 counts of lewd act on a minor.

An investigation began earlier this month when deputies received a report that Gardner may have abused students while working as a teacher at Walhalla Middle School and a wrestling coach at Walhalla High School. The abuse occurred both at his home and at school between 1998 and 2003, authorities said.

Deputies said they identified two victims, ages 12 and 14, but have evidence that shows more children may have been abused.

Telfair elementary teacher sentenced in child sex abuse case
- Update of 5/22/2012 article

A former third-grade teacher at Telfair Elementary School in Pacoima was sentenced on Thursday to 25 years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life for molesting 13 former students.

Paul Chapel III, 51, of Chatsworth, was arrested in October 2010, in connection with allegedly sexually abusing four minors. News about the arrest was not disclosed until February, garnering complaints from parents.

According to the civil complaint, the students were 8-years-old at the time they allege their teacher forced them to sit on his lap while he kissed and fondled them in class during school hours.

The complaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, also claims the Los Angeles Unified School District negligently hired and retained Chapel and should have known he had a history of sexual abuse cases in court.

Chapel was fired from his job in March and his teaching credential was suspended.

The complaint alleges the district hired Chapel despite the filing of a civil case against him for making sexual jokes and showing a sexually explicit video to Chaminade High School students in 1987. Chapel lost that case and paid the plaintiffs $57,000.

The complaint also alleges the district should have known that Chapel was prosecuted in 1997 for sexually molesting an 8-year-old family friend during a sleepover. The day of his arrest on Feb. 27, 1997, the district transferred Chapel from a classroom to an administrative office.

At the time, the state suspended his teaching credential.

Following the criminal trial, which ended in a hung jury, the district lifted Chapel’s suspension and he was allowed back into the classroom. He was reassigned to Telfair and reported to work on Oct. 9, 1998.

Chapel pleaded no contest Aug. 20 to 13 counts of lewd act on a child -- one involving each of his victims. The crimes occurred between September 2006 and April 2011 and involved children between the ages of eight and nine, according to the District Attorney's Office. Chapel was initially charged last fall with sexually abusing three girls and a boy. In May, prosecutors added charges involving nine other children.

Bible Baptist School teacher fired amid sexual abuse allegations from students

William Jackson, 57, a music teacher at the Bible Baptist School in Shiremanstown, has been fired from the school and from his position as minister of music at the Bible Baptist Church.

Jackson was fired from the Bible Baptist School in Shiremanstown last Friday after two parents came to the school with 19 pages of inappropriate text messages and emails Jackson allegedly sent to their 17-year-old son.  Jackson was fired from both the school and the church Monday, according to Wiedman and church pastor Ron Berrus.

Police contacted the parents and the student, and the student admitted that when he was 15 years old, he and the teacher were alone in the music room together, the court document said. At that time, the teacher asked him to pull down his pants, and when he did so, the teacher looked at his genitals closely and fondled him, according to the search warrant.

The student also said that he heard from another student (who is now the second alleged case) that he was hugged by the teacher and “felt uncomfortable,” the court document said. The first student also said that the teacher would give massages to other boys when they were alone with him in the music room.

A second search warrant was executed on Tuesday, and in that, the other 17-year-old boy, who talked to the first student earlier in the year, was interviewed by police and said that he was also fondled by the teacher, according to ABC27.

Jackson has not been charged.

A letter was sent out to parents notifying them of Jackson's termination and giving out  phone numbers for them to contact investigators and advocates. The letter said the school was notified of a concern about Jackson on Friday and immediately contacted authorities.

Jackson has been teaching music at the private Christian school since 2005, Wiedman said.  He also directed choirs for all levels and directed the orchestra for the school musical.

He was minister of music at the church for the past 18 years, Berrus said.

Jackson was also involved in other central Pennsylvania musical endeavors, including as accompanist for Voices of Palmyra and a singer with the Susquehanna Chorale.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 717-737-4356 or the district attorney's office at 717-240-6210.

Okla. teacher, Michelle McCutchan, convicted of raping two students, faces 15 years in prison

Michelle McCutchan, an Oklahoma teacher, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday after being convicted of raping two 16-year old male students, the Daily News reports.

The 40-year-old veteran Oklahoma teacher gave a tearful courtroom testimony, admitting that the sexual abuse that she suffered as a child is what drove her to engage in abusive sexual relationships with her students as an adult, local reports say.

McCutchan took the stand pleading for mercy, telling the court that she was sexually abused by a family member from the age of 12 to 15.

"There's no one in this room that can hate me more than I hate myself," McCutchan said in court.

McCutchan was ultimately sentenced to fifteen years for two counts of second degree-rape, ten years for two counts of sodomy, fifteen years for child neglect, and five consecutively running years for three counts of providing alcohol to minors.

These charges are within Oklahoma's 85 percent rule which mandates that McCutchan must be in prison for nearly 13 years before she is eligible parole.

Associate District Judge James Pratt offered little sympathy after hearing testimonies regarding the former Checotah middle school teacher's psychological plight, reportedly saying that her history of abuse was no excuse for her to "create more victims."

Pratt added that Wednesday was the first time that McCutchan had even expressed any remorse for raping the teens.

McCutchan even testified that she would have continued her sexual escapades if she had not been caught by her husband, the Daily News reported.

Preliminary hearing for teacher's aide accused of sex with student

A preliminary hearing was scheduled to get under way at the El Cajon courthouse Thursday for a female teacher's aide accused of having sex with a 15-year-old male student.

Chrystina Delrosario, 25, is charged with having unlawful sex with a minor at Reflections Central School, an educational program for juvenile offenders run by the county Office of Education on behalf of the county Probation Department.

Delrosario, who is free on $100,000 bail, allegedly had sex with the teen in a classroom on an afternoon in late June. La Mesa police arrested her on July 16, saying there was no immediate evidence of any other alleged episodes of illegal contact with the boy or any other juveniles.

Reflections Central School is located in La Mesa.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing whether there's enough evidence to order Delrosario to stand trial.

Sex abuse trial delayed for ex-priest, teacher

The trial of a former priest and a parochial school teacher accused of molesting the same young boy was abruptly postponed Tuesday after a death in the family of a defense attorney.

A new trial date for Father Charles Engelhardt, 65, and ex-teacher Bernard Shero, 49, will be decided on Friday and the case will be turned over to a new judge because of scheduling conflicts.

The delay was likely to frustrate both the prosecution and the alleged victim, identified only as "Billy Doe."  Billy was allegedly repeatedly molested and raped by Shero, Engelhardt, and a third priest beginning in 1998 — one of the most disturbing complaints of child sex abuse to come out of the Philadelphia Archdiocese.

Bernard G. Shero is charged with raping an altar boy at St. Jerome's Parish in northeast Philadelphia in the late 1990s and stands trial on Sept. 4, 2012.

The third attacker, ex-priest Edward Avery, pleaded guilty in March to sexual assault and was sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison.

The victim, now 23, was expected to take the stand against both Shero and Engelhardt, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The court has ordered a continuing gag order prohibiting lawyers or witnesses from talking to reporters about the trial.

Billy Doe also testified earlier this year in the landmark conspiracy trial against Msgr. William J. Lynn, 61, the first U.S. church official convicted of covering up sex-abuse claims against Roman Catholic priests. Billy's ordeal helped prosecutors build a case against Lynn.

Edward Avery was kept in his parish even after Billy's allegations surfaced, prosecutors said.

For his part, the victim has led a troubled life, struggling with a drug addiction and being kicked out of two high schools. He has also been arrested on charges including shoplifting.

The young man, who only spent an hour on the witness stand during Lynn's trial, said he kept his abuse secret for years. "I thought I did something wrong - and it's a priest," he said of Avery's assault. "I didn't think anyone would believe me."

According to the grand jury report, Engelhardt was the first to assault Billy, who referred to the abuse as "sessions." Soon after, Avery also began "sessions" with the boy.  The following school year, Shero was accused of raping Billy in a park while giving the boy a ride home.

20-year-old testifies that ex-TPS administrator sexually abused him for years

A 20-year-old man testified Wednesday that he decided to break his silence about the sexual abuse he quietly endured for years when he heard reports of children being touched inappropriately by the same former Tulsa Public Schools administrator.

Robert Yerton, Jr., a former Skelly Elementary School assistant principal, had worked in local schools for nearly two decades when he was arrested and then charged with three counts of lewd molestation involving students at two Tulsa schools and two counts of sexual abuse involving Wednesday's witness, who lived in Yerton's household until he moved out when he was 17.

The charges, filed in May 2010, allege that Yerton, now 43, began sexually abusing the boy when the boy was 11.

The Tulsa World is not naming the man in keeping with the newspaper's policy on not identifying sex-crime survivors.

The witness testified that subsequent abuse included Yerton's unlocking the bathroom door and pulling back the curtain while he was showering and Yerton's repeated touching of the youngster's genitals in the early morning hours before the boy had gotten out of bed.

The 20-year-old, who said he graduated from an area high school in 2010, testified that he didn't tell his friends or anyone else for years because he regarded his high school reputation as more important than his own safety.

He said that even when he was going through the legal process of moving out of the Yerton home, his pride kept him from disclosing the purported sexual abuse among his reasons for leaving.

The man said he had "planned to take this to my grave" until he saw news accounts about Yerton's alleged conduct with students.

On June 8, U.S. District Judge James Payne entered judgments in a pair of lawsuits brought by the parents of two children who allege that they were sexually abused by Yerton.

Each case was settled for $25,000, to be paid "by or on behalf" of Tulsa Public Schools, documents indicate.

The lawsuits alleged that Tulsa Public Schools had received complaints concerning inappropriate sexual contact involving Yerton and at least one student but did not notify law enforcement authorities.

Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Sarah Mc- Amis told the jurors that a lot of people who worked for the district had "a lot of concern" about Yerton. Yet, McAmis said, such concerns went "unchecked" until a parent notified the media about what she alleged Yerton had done to her son.

The Tulsa school board accepted Yerton's resignation in June 2010.

Illinois court rules against school district in teacher sex abuse case

School administrators in McLean County can be sued for failing to warn a neighboring district that it was hiring a teacher with a record of sexual misconduct, a divided Illinois Supreme Court ruled Thursday in a case with echoes of the Penn State scandal.

The teacher, Jon White, went on to abuse at least eight girls in his new job.

Administrators at McLean County Unit District No. 5 had gotten multiple complaints about White and suspended him twice, for viewing pornography on a school computer and for making suggestive remarks to a fifth grader. White was forced to resign.

But the district wrote a positive letter of recommendation for White. When he applied for a teaching job in Urbana, they filled out an employment verification form without making clear he left his job before the end of the school year.

The Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said the information that White did not finish the year might have been a red flag that would have triggered more scrutiny by the Urbana school district. The court said the students who were later abused by White can proceed with a lawsuit against the McLean County officials.

The ruling did not say school officials have a broad duty to warn other schools about potentially dangerous teachers. In this case, it was the action of providing false, or at least incomplete, information on the employment verification form that opens the door to a lawsuit.

"The court did what it had to do. It said you have to report," said Ellyn Bullock, a Champaign attorney representing four of White's victims. "I think the safety message will get through. I think it will even influence courts in other states."

School district officials are disappointed by the decision and are reviewing it to decide what step to take next, a spokeswoman said.

Lyn Schollet, general counsel for the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said the ruling should drive home the message that schools "should not protect themselves at the expense of the children we trust them to teach and protect."

White pleaded guilty in 2008 to molesting girls, often with a "taste game" in which the girls were blindfolded and had to taste various toppings placed on what they thought was a banana. He was sentenced to 48 years in prison for molesting eight girls in Urbana and 12 years for his actions with two girls in Bloomington-Normal.

The lawsuit claims the Urbana girls could have been spared any harm if officials at White's previous job had spoken up about his behavior.

Former Duval teacher gets 60 years for sexually abusing student

A former Duval County teacher facing sex battery and molestation charges in separate case was sentenced Tuesday to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing one of his students in another case.

Robert Bryan Luke, 37, was a teacher and coach at Lake Shore Middle School when the State Attorney’s Office said he abused a boy younger than 16 over an 18-month stretch during 2006 and 2007. He was convicted in May of two counts of sexual battery.

When charged in April 2011, Luke had already been jailed for about a year in an unrelated sexual abuse case. In that case, he faces two more sexual battery charges on a victim younger than 18 and two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation.

ROTC Instructor accused in child sexual abuse is found hanged

A former South Charleston High School Air Force Junior ROTC teacher charged with sexually abusing a child hanged himself in a hotel room.

Master Sgt. Eddie Smuda, 59, committed suicide in a New Jersey hotel while on a trip to visit family, according to authorities.

Smuda was awaiting trial after police said he sexually abused one of his male students in 2011.

Dunbar Police Chief E. E. Whittington said two additional victims came forward after the first one.

"Usually crimes of this type have a tendency to lend to additional victims, which is what has happened," he said.

Dunbar Police said even though Smuda is gone, this doesn't mean that the case is closed.

"We've received information that there is the possibility of further victims, and we're also investigating those leads as well to indicate whether those are valid victims or not," he said.

People may never know whether or not this former teacher committed these sexual crimes. Their focus is helping the victims who have come forward.

Police also want to reach out to those who might have been ashamed to speak up in the past.

Manhattan Teacher Arrested on Sex Abuse Charges

A New York City elementary school teacher was held on bail Thursday on charges he sexually abused an 8-year-old student in the school, a week after Mayor Michael Bloomberg pushed for more power to fire teachers accused of sex crimes.

Rafael Sosa, 29, of Yonkers, was arrested Wednesday and held on $75,000 bail, accused of multiple sexual acts with the girl between Dec. 1 and June 6, according to a criminal complaint. He was also accused of making her send him love notes over e-mail. The Department of Education reassigned him from his job at Public School 208 in Manhattan, also known as the Alain L. Locke Elementary School, where he had worked since September 2009.

Bloomberg has used the issue to call on the state Legislature to give him more authority to fire tenured teachers accused of sexual misconduct. He wants his schools chancellor, Dennis Walcott, to have the final decision on whether to fire teachers, rather than leaving that question up to independent arbitrators.

This wouldn’t be an issue in Sosa’s case, because he doesn’t have tenure.

Teacher sexually abused children over 22 years

A teacher at an Islamic school, Hasnain Manji,  committed a string of child sex crimes over 22 years.

The first crime happened as long ago as November 1989, when Manji attacked a 12-year-old boy. The victim is now in his 30s.

Manji, from Hertfordshire, continued to prey on children until finally being exposed by a victim he abused in the 10 months up until May 2011.

Scotland Yard got involved when the child’s mother contacted them, after being told of the abuse

Manji was a tutor at weekends for several years at the Islamic Centre in Stanmore.

Last Friday (June 8), he was jailed for five years and placed for life on the child sex register.

“The first two victims suffered in silence for many years trying to put what happened to them at the back of their minds,” said a detective.

Police fear more victims of Manji may have not reported abuse. A special hotline has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Call: 0808 800 5000.

Former Sampson County teacher pleads guilty to distribution of child pornography

A former Sampson County school teacher pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday to distribution of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

According to a news release, law enforcement officers who were investigating online trafficking of child pornography last year discovered that someone in Roseboro was sharing images depicting the sexual abuse of young boys.

After seeing the same person offer these images on multiple occasions, the news release says, investigators traced the source of the images to Paul Stephen Pearsall's home.

Pearsall, 31, worked as a middle school teacher and coach in Newton Grove.

A search warrant was executed at Pearsall's home and his computer equipment was taken in October. Investigators found hundreds of images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, the news release says.

Pearsall faces up to 20 years imprisonment at sentencing.

He was arrested during Operation Spyglass, a law enforcement effort that led to the arrest of 24 suspects.

Jason Fennes, 37, of Bloomfield, who has been jailed since March, now faces additional charges for an alleged sexual relationship with a Butler High School track athlete he coached in the mid-'90s and for allegedly sexually assaulting two William Mason first-grade students during the 2006-07 school year.

Fennes worked in the Montville School District from September 1998 until he resigned in June 2010, was originally arrested on March 8 on charges of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. An investigation revealed Fennes allegedly sexually abused a girl in his first-grade class in 2005.

Anyone with information regarding Fennes should contact the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200 or the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Stopper Program at 973-COPCALL.

$10,000 Bail For Brooklyn Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With 16-Year-Old Student

Bail for a Brooklyn high school teacher accused of repeatedly having sex with a 16-year-old male student was set at $10,000 during a court appearance Friday.

English teacher Erin Sayar, 36, was arrested Thursday for rape and other charges for engaging in sexual conduct with the 11th grade student at Brooklyn’s James Madison High School, investigators said.

In a detailed account of the alleged sexual encounters, Sayar, who also has a child, picked up the teen at his home around midnight one night late last year and then “took him to Marine Park where they engaged in sexual intercourse in her SUV,” said special commissioner Richard Condon.

Condon said the student confessed to having relationship with Sayar.

The student’s parents, who were seen in court with their lawyer, charge that sex also took place in her office where she tutored the boy, and that she allegedly provided him marijuana.

The parents of the male student in this case have filed a $10 million notice of claim against the Department of Education, and neighbors of Sayar in Park Slope said they are disturbed by the charges.

“She’s having sex with a minor, knowing she has a good man at home and a child; I don’t know,” Zoe Carrero said.

Sayar faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Close to 20 Department of Education employees have been arrested already this year.

The seemingly never-ending string of arrests are now prompting state lawmakers to act. They’re pushing new legislation that would give school districts the final say on teacher discipline instead of arbitrators. “Every child should be protected from people who are predators,” said State Sen. Stephen Saland (R-Poughkeepsie).

In New York City, teacher discipline is currently decided by an outside hearing officer, a system Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said doesn’t always work.  “In one case, an investigator found that a teacher had inappropriately touched a number of female students. This was the teacher’s second hearing for such behavior, but the hearing officer only imposed suspension without pay and a strong warning,” Bloomberg said. ”How can we, as adults, let that teacher go back into the classroom?”

Queens computer teacher charged with groping 3 more children

A Queens computer teacher arrested this year in the molestation of two students has been charged with fondling three others, officials said Thursday.

Wilbert Cortez, 49, is accused of molesting five boys between 2007 and 2011 on multiple occasions at PS 174.

Cortez — who was reassigned out of the classroom after his Feb. 16 arrest — was arraigned Wednesday night in Queens Criminal Court.

The teacher — who has been working in city schools since 1986 — is accused of placing his hand on the genitals of two students, ages 6 and 10, over their clothing while they were seated in his classroom, the district attorney said.

Cortez would also allegedly fondle the 10-year-old through his clothes while he helped clean the classroom after the lessons were over, officials said. Cortez also is accused of going into the teacher’s bathroom with an 8-year-old boy and fondling him under his clothing, officials said.

Cortez could be looking at 14 years in prison if convicted on all counts, officials said. He was released Thursday on $60,000 bail and is due back in court on June 11, according to officials and Correction Department records.

In 2000, an investigation revealed Cortez slapped two students on the buttocks on three different occasions in 1999 and 2000 at PS 184 in Brooklyn. A disciplinary letter was placed in his file.

Child Caregiver Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges

A 24-year-old El Cajon man, Corey Loftin, who worked at a preschool, at the time of his arrest, and advertised his services as a babysitter, pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and faces 40 years in federal prison.

According to the plea agreement, between 2008 and April 29, 2011, Loftin used a computer to communicate via video with two 7-year-old females who lived in Pennsylvania and tried to persuade them to engage in sexually explicit conduct.

During this same time frame, Loftin was in contact with 44-year-old Michael Izadore Bonsignore of Harriburg, Penn., and asked him to record himself performing various sex acts with the minors and send him the videos.

Loftin also admitted to using a cell phone camera to take upskirt photos of two minor females at a preschool in San Diego County where he worked.

Finally, Loftin also admitted to receiving and distributing child pornography depicting the minors from Pennsylvania and other unidentified children via the internet.

Loftin previously worked at Children’s Choice daycare center in El Cajon and the Cuyamaca College Child Development Center.

Loftin also is facing more than a dozen charges of committing lewd acts and child molesting that are pending in Superior Court.  Those charges involve several local victims as well.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 24.

Special Ed Teacher Pleads Guilty to Possession of Child Porn

Michael Scott Cooper, 43, of Bakersfield, pleaded guilty today to possession of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

According to the plea agreement, Cooper possessed images and videos depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Cooper possessed the child pornography on his computer, and many of the images depicted prepubescent minors.

Cooper was a teacher at Loudan Elementary School in Bakersfield. He was arrested on October 7, 2010. He has been out of custody on electronic monitoring with various restrictions, including access to children, computers, and the Internet. Cooper was immediately taken into the custody upon entry of his guilty plea today.

Cooper is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on July 30, 2012. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime term of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory sentencing factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bakersfield Police Department.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) in the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children as well as to identify and rescue victims.

Former Christian school teacher accused of having sex with teen waives hearing

Nicole Jacques, 25, a former Calvary Baptist teacher facing numerous charges relating to an alleged relationship with a teenage boy, waived a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

In exchange for waiving the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Quigg agreed to dismiss 10 counts of involuntary sexual intercourse, 10 counts of statutory sexual assault and one count of corruption of minors.

Outside the courtroom, Quigg said that he dismissed those counts as part of an agreement with the defense to waive the hearing to “prevent the victim from having to testify.” However, he acknowledged if the case goes to trial the victim, who was 15 at the time of the alleged incidents, would be required to take the stand.

If convicted, Jacques could be sentenced to 253 to 507 years in prison, said Quigg. A plea agreement has not yet been offered, Quigg said.

Jacques met the 15-year-old youth through her former job at Calvary Baptist School, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The boy’s father contacted police in February about the alleged relationship between Jacques and his son. She resigned her teaching position in 2011 but continued to communicate with the teenager, police said.

During an interview with Mission Kids Child Advocacy Center, the boy said that he and Jacques had intercourse about 50 times and engaged in other sexual acts 20 times between February 2011 and February 2012. The trysts allegedly occurred at Jacques’ apartment.

Trial starts for girls suing school in sexual abuse claim
-Update of 10/29/09 and 4/8/10 articles

A former teacher convicted of sexual battery against two Carlsbad elementary school girls is out of prison after less than two years, according to state prison officials, but his name does not appear on the state's Megan's Law website.

The teacher, Raymond Lewis Firth, 41, was released from prison on March 3, a state prison official said.

On Monday, jury selection began in a civil trial involving two of Firth's young victims, whose parents are suing Carlsbad Unified School District on their behalf. The suit says that the school district was negligent in monitoring Firth during the seven years he taught at Pacific Rim Elementary School.

During Firth's criminal case, the prosecutor said children told authorities that Firth ---- a second- and third-grade teacher ---- would put them on his lap and touch them inappropriately with one hand while helping them with their school work. In some instances, Firth slipped his hand into their underwear and molested the girls, the prosecutor said.

Convictions for the charges could have landed him in prison for up to 18 years. But prosecutors dismissed those charges when Firth agreed to a plea bargain. In April 2010, Firth was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender.

As of Wednesday ---- more than two months after his release ---- Firth's name did not appear on California's Megan's Law website, which posts names and, in some cases, the photos and addresses of sex offenders. Firth's conviction qualifies him for the public registry, according to the website's guidelines. State law requires officials to post public information about most sex offenders on the website, but the process is complicated and can take a varying amount of time.

Daniel Acker's date with prison to begin within 90 days after child sex abuse guilty pleas (videos)

COLUMBIANA, Alabama -- Within 90 days, retired fourth-grade teacher Daniel M. Acker Jr. will be in an Alabama state prison after pleading guilty Thursday to eight counts of child sexual abuse.

Acker received 17-year sentences on each of six counts of sexual abuse first degree of a child less than 12 and 10-year sentences on each of two counts of sexual abuse first degree. The sentences will run concurrently and will include the time already spent in the Shelby County Jail.

After serving the 17 years, Acker must wear an electronic monitor for 10 years. He also must register as an adult sex offender.

"This is a very tough sentence," said Richard Minor, the special prosecutor for the case. "In Alabama, anyone sentenced to a life sentence may be released after 12 years. We are striving to reach truth in sentencing; in this case 17 years means 17 years."

"You are not eligible for probation or parole," Judge James Hill Jr. told Acker during the hearing. "You get no trial; you get no appeal.

"This guilty plea means you admit to being a sexually violent predator," Hill said.

Former Catholic school students fight to keep child rapist in prison - Court ruling could release teacher from four life sentences (4/28/2012)

Standing under a stormy sky, Bill Stankiewicz got chills as he looked toward the old brick building that once housed the Catholic Community middle school in South Baltimore.

"It's kind of creepy," he said, rubbing goose bumps along his forearms. He hadn't been back since graduation in the 1970s, purposely avoiding the school — and the memories of what happened in it.

"Thirty-six years is a long time to bury something. It's time to exorcise the demons."

Roughly two dozen of his surviving classmates gathered at the site last weekend, all bound by a shared childhood tragedy detailed in multiple court filings: repeated sexual and mental abuse by English teacher John J. Merzbacher, now 71. They've come together in middle age to fight for his continued imprisonment, as a federal judge's court ruling threatens to release the convicted child rapist from four life terms.

The former students are posting recollections on a private Facebook page and using their renewed connections to marshal resources. They've reached out to the Archdiocese of Baltimore, along with local politicians and prosecutors, and vowed to bring fresh criminal cases — or push for the reopening of old ones — if Merzbacher is set free.

Bolton teacher jailed over catalogue of child sex images

Andrew Ward, a depraved high school teacher who downloaded and stored a vile catalogue of child abuse images on his home computer has been jailed.

Dr. Andrew Ward, a father-of-two, was found with thousands of indecent images on a laptop and computer devices. The 46-year-old science teacher was suspended from Canon Slade School in Bradshaw, Bolton, after police raided his home. He was jailed for 12 months today and disqualified from working with children. Ward was also banned from accessing the internet, from deleting any computer images and from keeping any computer storage devices. He will be on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Locked up in April '12 , a laptop, PC and a disk were seized by police then examined by computer experts after a raid at his former home on Compton Road in Lostock, Bolton, last November.

Ward, who moved to live in Leeds, had joined an images network that was being routinely scanned to identify offenders, Bolton Crown Court was told. It was discovered that a computer registered in his name had accessed the network and downloaded a child abuse video file. That led to the authorization of a warrant to search his home. Police discovered a total of 9,802 indecent images of children.

Further images showing 'extreme' sexual activity with animals were also found, along with 'instruction material' on how to abuse children. Ward, the court heard, even used the Japanese version of the Google search engine to hunt for images, typing in specific search criteria relating to abuse.

The court was told that forensic computer experts found Ward routinely used specialist software to 'clean up' his computer and cover his tracks. Programmes about guidance on how to avoid detection by others were also discovered, the court heard.

The judge, Recorder Nicholas Clarke QC, said Ward held a position of trust as a teacher. He said: “Child pornography is not an applicable label. These are child abuse images. Each image is of a real child. It was a deliberate and intentional act of searching for this sort of material. In addition to searching, you viewed them, saved them and categorised them into sub-files and folders within your computer. You have contributed to the demand for this type of material. You identified ages of children which you were interested in, some aged as young as three.”

Former teacher and coach admits to distributing child porn

Brian Stern, 35, former seventh grade science teacher and swim coach at an independent New Jersey day school admitted today to making available images and videos of prepubescent children being sexually abused—sometimes violently- to others over the Internet, United States Attorney Fishman announced.

Until May 2011, when he was arrested, Stern downloaded and posted videos and images of child pornography via peer-to-peer file sharing software, through which others had access to the material on a shared drive. Stern admitted that his offerings included images of numerous children younger than 12 and depictions of sadistic and violent conduct. The images downloaded by federal investigators and found on Stern’s computer included pictures of very young children being restrained and sexually abused.

Sentencing is currently scheduled for July 24, 2012.

United States Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the FBI Newark Division’s Cyber Crime Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael B Ward; and detectives of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit, under the direction of Acting Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray, with the investigation leading to the guilty plea.

Washington, D.C. - 4/10/2012
Former Teacher Eric Justin Toth, Alleged Child Pornographer, Added To FBI's Most Wanted List

The FBI named Eric Justin Toth, an alleged child pornographer, to its Ten Most Wanted list.

Eric Justin Toth was 26 and a third-grade teacher in a Washington, D.C. private school in 2008 when authorities accused him of possession of kiddie porn.

Another teacher at Beauvoir, an elite school, discovered graphic photos and videos of students on a school camera issued to Toth. The school put Toth on administrative leave and contacted police. But he immediately went on the run, an FBI spokesperson told The Huffington Post. He's also wanted in Maryland where he's accused of child porn production.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Toth's capture. He traveled across the country after warrants were issued for his arrest nearly four years ago.

First, Toth drove to Indianapolis where he visited his parents, according to the FBI. They were unaware that he was suspected of any crime.

The FBI traced his movements to the Twin Cities where in August 2008 his car was found parked at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Agents allegedly found additional pornographic images of children in the car. Evidence also suggests that he visited Wisconsin and Illinois.

A tipster claimed he saw Toth living in a Phoenix homeless shelter in 2009, but the fugitive took off again before law enforcement could catch him. That was the last reported sighting of Toth.

Toth is 6’3”, weighs about 155 pounds and has brown hair and green eyes. He's worked as a camp counselor and tutor.

Toth is "well educated, charismatic and likable," an FBI spokesperson told Huff Post. He's a computer expert and may have advertised his services as a nanny or tutor. It's possible he used his deceptive personality to trick parents and get close to children again, the spokesperson said.

Toth, who's used the alias "David Bussone," takes a spot on the notorious most wanted list that became empty after Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan last May. The capture of alleged mobster James "Whitey" Bulger last June created another opening on the list that bureau officials said they would fill soon.

Child molester, former Minneapolis police chief, teacher, coach, lawyer and camp counselor gets 18 years in prison

Beginning at age 12, the boy silently endured three years of sexual abuse at the hands of family friend Bill "Jake" Jacobs. When he finally came forward, he had to wait more than two years as Jacobs' case moved through the courts.

Now 17, he stood with eyes fixed on his tormenter one last time as two sheriff's deputies led Jacobs through a door out of the Minneapolis courtroom.

Jacobs - a former teacher, coach, lawyer and police chief who prosecutors said spent 50 years abusing dozens of young boys - was sentenced Monday, April 9, to 18 years in prison.

It was the maximum sentence he could've received after he pleaded guilty last month to three counts of criminal sexual conduct and three counts of possession of child porn.

Jacobs, 68, will be among the oldest inmates in state prison. As of Monday, only 81 of the 9,300 people in state lockups were 68 or older. He must serve at least 12 years before he's released, and he'll spend the rest of his life under court supervision as a registered sex offender.

Jacobs had lived in Deephaven but spent his last few months of freedom at his cabin on the shores of Lake Superior north of Lutsen. He had a career teaching and coaching at posh private schools, working as a police officer and later police chief, earning a law degree and then becoming an instructor at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

The end of that career started Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, when the young man told his mother that Jacobs had been sexually abusing him since a 2007 camping trip. Jacobs, a trusted family friend, often took the boy on outings.

Five days after the youth confided to his mother, Jacobs was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual abuse.
Suspecting other victims, Hennepin County officials released a "wanted" poster with photos of Jacobs from 1965, 1980, 1995 and 2010, and asked victims or parents to call.

More than 20 people came forward to claim Jacobs had abused them. The earliest case was 1962, when he was a 19-year-old camp counselor and student at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.

Court filings show that over the years some people around Jacobs suspected him of molesting young boys but did little to stop him. YMCA camp officials and administrators of at least three private schools dealt privately with accusations against the man; none went to police.

Ralston Teacher Accused of Assault

Police arrested 58-year-old Ralston Public School teacher, Nicholas Richter.  He's charged with three counts of third degree sexual assault on a child.  Richter is accused of inappropriately touching students.

Richter taught advanced math and English to elementary students at several schools including Seymour Elementary.

His alleged victims are three 9 and 10 year-old boys.

Ralston Police say they found out about the alleged abuse through Child Protective Services, but aren't releasing many details on the case.

"This is obviously a blow to the community and a blow to the school district," says Ron Murtaugh, the Ralston Police Chief.

Police aren't saying if the alleged incidents happened at Seymour Elementary or another school he taught at.

"The allegations are from August 2010 to April of this year, so it happened over a series of times and several times to several different individuals," says Kleine.

Action 3 News has learned Richter retired from the Council Bluffs Public School District in 2008 after 32 years of teaching gifted and talented students.

Ralston faces 15 years in prison.

Former Newton teacher faces child pornography charges

A former Newton Teacher facing a slew of child pornography charges in two Massachusetts counties was released on his personal recognizance at Suffolk Superior Court April 3. The move allows the court to transport Ettlinger to Louisiana where he faces federal charges for participating in an online child pornography forum.

Prosecutors said they found hundreds of images of child pornography on his computer.  He was later charged with indecent assault on a person under 14 and posing a child in the nude. Prosecutors said the victim was family friend he was babysitting.

David Ettlinger, 34, of Brighton, was scheduled to appear in court in Boston Tuesday afternoon and then to be taken to Louisiana, where he faces charges for his alleged membership in Dreamboard, an international forum that promoted sexual abuse of children.

He is scheduled to go on trial at Suffolk Superior Court on Dec. 10. He will go on trial at Middlesex Superior Court next February.

Police to ask US to hand over ex-teacher

Police will this month seek to extradite a former teacher at a Melbourne Jewish orthodox school from the United States over a child sex abuse scandal that was allegedly covered up by the school.

Parents allege that Yeshivah College in East St Kilda assisted the former teacher, David Kramer, to flee Australia in 1993 after they complained he had sexually abused their children.

Kramer was the focus of a Victoria Police probe launched last year into alleged sexual abuse at Yeshivah College between 1989 and 1993, which has widened to include other alleged perpetrators.

A parent said that Yeshivah College did not go to the police in 1993 despite accusations that Kramer, who taught Jewish studies and was a chaperone at camps, had sexually abused children at the school.

''We couldn't even get them to fire the guy,'' the parent said. A meeting was called at which parents intended to give Yeshivah College an ultimatum: sack Kramer or they would go to the police.
Fifteen minutes before the meeting was due to start, the parents received a phone call telling them that there was no need to proceed. A week and a half later Kramer was ''spirited out of the country''.

''Times were different 20 years ago. It's a very closed community and there was a reticence to talk about any of those things and to try to keep them under cover.''

Meanwhile, former Yeshivah College security guard, David Samuel Cyprys, has been charged with 51 counts of gross indecency, indecent assault, false imprisonment, common law assault, attempted indecent assault and rape involving 11 alleged victims.

Cyprys' committal hearing will begin on May 7.

San Bernardino Teacher Arrested on Child Porn Charges

FBI agents arrested a Arrowview Middle School social studies teacher and former Rim High history teacher, who is accused of five federal child pornography charges. Eugene Ballantyne, 29, will not go free on bail as expected, a federal judge decided on Tuesday, even as new allegations of recent sexual abuse surfaced involving one of his students.

Ballantyne, a husband and father of three young children, will remain in federal custody rather than qualifying for a $250,000 bail, U.S. District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips ruled in Riverside. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry C. Yang, who is prosecuting Ballantyne, said Tuesday he had argued against bail, claiming Ballantyne was both a flight risk and a danger to the community.

In a federal Grand Jury indictment, Ballantyne is accused of five felonies stemming from his allegedly having exchanged sexually explicit photographs with a 13-year-old New Jersey girl he’d met on the Internet.

In a sworn affidavit, an FBI special agent states that Ballantyne acknowledged to him also having received explicit images from a 15-year-old girl he met online two years ago, and having driven 180 miles to have sex with a 17-year-old girl.

“Defendant, according to the child victim number 5, was sending her text messages as she’s in his class—sitting in front of him sending her text messages,” Yang argued. “She had no idea it was the defendant here. She thought it was some teenage boy that she had met on the Internet when, in fact, it was her own teacher sitting right in front of the classroom. That, your honor, is very troubling to the government.”

Should the continuing investigation generate new criminal charges, Yang said, the case would be taken back to the Grand Jury for a new indictment.

Ballantyne faces one count of inducing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct, one of using the Internet to induce a minor into sexual activity for which she could be criminally charged, two counts of knowingly receiving a digital image of child pornography and one count of possessing a smartphone with at least one image of child pornography.

Yang said the first charge carries a sentence of 15 to 30 years in prison, while the others could result in terms of 10 years to life, five years to 20 and up to 10 years in prison, respectively. Whether to sentence convicted defendants to serve sentences consecutively or concurrently is up to the judge, he said.

Ex-Principal charged with child sex abuse

The former principal of Snake River Junior High School was back in court Thursday morning. Christopher Cox, charged with three counts of sexual abuse of a minor child under 16, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Cox's next court appearance will be in front of District Court Judge Darren Simpson at 1 p.m. on April 2.

"I will extend the no-contact order that's been in effect in this matter until that date,” said Judge Charles Roos.

The alleged victim in the case was 14 years old at the time she told police a relationship occurred between herself and Cox.

In a detailed case file, police said the girl moved out of state. According to the report, the encounters between Cox and her occurred on school property and her home.

Bronx pastor accused of raping two teens

The pastor of a Bronx church charged with rape last January for impregnating a teen was indicted Thursday for raping another girl, prosecutors said.

Michael Clare, the 40-year-old married leader of the Harvest Worship Center in Wakefield, had sexual contact with the girl at least three times between June 22, 2009 and June 30, 2011 at the school and inside his home, prosecutors said.

Their two-year relationship began when the girl was 14, police said. The victim, now 17, reported the allegations earlier this month, cops said.

The girl was a student a Harvest Preparatory Academy, a school run out of Clare’s tiny storefront church. Records still list him as the principal there.

The new charges against Clare include rape, sexual misconduct and sexual abuse.

Clare was first arrested in June 2010 for allegedly repeatedly having sex with a different girl from his flock — starting when she was 12, prosecutors said.

The girl became pregnant, and DNA evidence implicated Clare, prosecutors said. He was indicted for raping her in Jan. 2011.

He faces 32 years in state prison if convicted of the two rape charges.

A Ramona High School teacher's aide is scheduled to appear in court Thursday on charges of child molestation.

Robert Buechner, 69, was arrested at the high school Thursday during lunch and booked into jail on multiple counts on child molest according to Chula Vista police.

The acts occurred over several months at various locations, including in Buechner’s home, police said.

The victim is a 15 year-old boy living at a facility for behavioral issues. He did not attend Ramona High, and police do not believe any other students at the school were involved. The victim met Buechner through a family member, police said.

According to Lt. Gary Wedge, a staff member reported something suspicious between Buechner and the alleged victim. "She did see some behavior that made her uncomfortable and it was reported ultimately to us," Wedge said.

Buechner's neighbor Lisa Miscione could not believe the news. "He dresses up as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus every year. He's great with the kids. He's just a super guy," Miscione said.

The defendant worked at the high school as a special education teacher's aide for the last seven years according to Principal Tony Newman.

The Ramona Superintendent's office told us that they are not reacting to the incident since it did not involve any students. They said there were no reported incidents with him.

Buechner's bail is set at $100,000. He will be arraigned Thursday in South Bay Court.

Delbarton School lawsuit alleges sex abuse cover-up

Twin brothers whose father worked at the prestigious Delbarton School have filed a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by two monks.

The Star-Ledger reports that Tom and Bill Crane, who are in their 40s, filed a suit in Superior Court in Morristown on Tuesday morning alleging that they were sexually assaulted and/ or abused by the Rev. Luke Travers, 55 and the Rev. Justin Capato, 63.

According to the complaint, the brothers were abused in the late 1970s and 1980. The 35-page lawsuit does not describe the abuse.

The twin’s father, Bill Crane Sr. worked at the Morris County school for 42 years, first as a teacher and then as an administrator, rising to the level of assistant headmaster. The family lived on the school campus for two years. As children, the brothers had access to both the school campus and the adjoining St. Mary’s Abbey.

The Crane brothers contend that officials at Delbarton and St. Mary’s Abbey knew or should have knows about the abuse and engaged in a cover-up.

According to the Daily Record, the brothers also claim to have been abused by the Rev. James T. Hanley while attending St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Mendham. Hanley, who was defrocked in 2002, admitted to molesting at least 12 children and claimed publicly that Bill Crane Jr. was his last victim.

Governor Chris Christie’s son, Andrew is currently a student at Delbarton.

Sex abuse charges mount against ex-teacher as victims speak out

A sixth person has come forward to accuse a former Johnston County science teacher of sexual abuse, Clayton police said Monday.

Paul Clifton Canally, 29, of Clayton, faces more than three dozen charges, including six counts of statutory rape, two counts of sex with a student, seven counts of indecent liberties and eight counts of sexual battery for offenses dating to 2008 that involve boys under age 16.

According to search warrants, the alleged victims told investigators that Canally met them through school, continued to connect with them on Facebook and asked them to start "hanging out" at his house, where he molested and took photos of them.

Canally worked as a seventh-grade science teacher and science club adviser at Archer Lodge Middle from August 2007 to July 2009, when he resigned for personal reasons, Johnston County Schools spokeswoman Terri Sessoms said.

Police said Canally also worked as a camp counselor in Pennsylvania, and they are trying to determine if there were any victims there.

SC, Charleston - 3/7/2012 Former Coach and Teacher facing more than a century in prison for child molestation

Louis "Skip" ReVille became one of the Lowcountry's most prolific molesters Tuesday as his tally of alleged victims rose to 22 amid a sweeping round of indictments that could land him in prison for more than 100 years.

Daniel Acker, retired teacher, indicted on 8 counts of child sexual abuse
- Update of 1/6/2012 article

A Shelby County grand jury has indicted retired Alabaster teacher Daniel M. Acker, Jr., on eight counts of sexual abuse. Included are charges by two new victims, and police say its investigation is ongoing. Deputy Police Chief Curtis Rigney said that the investigation will remain ongoing until they are satisfied that everyone who wants to come forward has that opportunity to do so. Then, a judge will set a date for Acker to be arraigned.

Acker has been in the Shelby County jail since Jan. 4, when he was arrested after a 12-yr-old girl accused him of touching her inappropriately while she was in his fourth-grade class, in 2009. Police say that when he was brought in for questioning two months ago, he confessed to abusing more than 20 girls during his career as a teacher.

Acker is a member of a prominent Shelby County family. He taught in the Shelby County school system from 1985 until 2009. During the last 15 yrs. of his teaching career, he also drove a school bus. Upon his retirement as a teacher, he continued to work for the county school system as a substitute bus driver.

Man charged with 63 counts of sexual abuse

Steffon Rodney Christian, 48, was a kindergarten aide, coach and library secretary at Baldwin Elementary School in Manassas, where he worked between August 1981 and September 1999. On Tuesday, Christian was indicted on 63 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 victims, according to prosecutors.

The indictment significantly expands the allegations against Christian, who had been charged in November with four counts of forcible sodomy. The victim in that case, authorities have said, was abused as a child between 1993 and 1997. Two of the new charges, however, are connected with incidents in 2011, a law enforcement source said, and others predate 1993.

Authorities say Christian was charismatic and found ways to gain the trust of young boys. He would take students — especially those experiencing family trouble — on golf outings, host them at his home and give them gifts, authorities have said.

Police continue to investigate and are considering additional charges, law enforcement sources said.

Christian’s case comes on the heels of another abuse scandal in Manassas schools. Kevin Ricks, a former English teacher, was convicted last year of abusing boys he met as a camp counselor, teacher and foreign exchange host.

TX, Waco - 2/27/2012 Jury Selection Set In Student Sex Trial Of Ex-Local Kindergarten Teacher

A former Waco kindergarten teacher is set to go on trial Monday, charged with multiple counts of sexual misconduct in connection with abuse of students.

Fernando Campos, 41, is a former teacher at Alta Vista Montessori Magnet School kindergarten and has been held since his arrest on March 22, 2010 in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of $900,000 bond and on an immigration hold.

In an affidavit filed August 5, 2010, a female victim says Campos touched her inappropriately, both over and under her clothes, on four different occasions when she was a student in his class.

According to court records this victim was his fourth.

On June 16, 2010, Campos was named in an indictment charging continuous sexual abuse of a child and four counts of indecency with a child by contact in incidents involving two of his young students in 2009.

A case involving another student was still pending at the time the indictment was handed down by the grand jury, prosecutors said.

In April, he was charged with indecency with a child in an incident involving yet another student at the school, where he worked as a bilingual pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teacher.

Queens School Aide Charged With Sexually Abusing 6 Girls, becoming the fifth school worker charged in the last few weeks

A school aide in Queens was arrested Thursday on charges of sexually abusing six 9- and 10-year-old girls at the school, becoming the fifth city school worker charged in the last few weeks with sexual crimes against children.

The aide, Brett Picou, 30, of Public School 52 in Springfield Gardens, is awaiting arraignment on seven felony counts of sexual abuse, one felony count of repeated sexual abuse of a child and seven misdemeanor counts of forcible touching, the Queens district attorney’s office said.

Mr. Picou has been a full-time paraprofessional at the school since January 2010, the Education Department said. Paraprofessionals are aides assigned to individual students, often special-needs students or students in crisis. Mr. Picou has no disciplinary record and has been suspended since the allegation was made on Feb. 15, the department said.

The recent string of charges against school employees, several of them with histories of sexual contact with children buried in their personnel records, prompted the schools chancellor, Dennis M. Walcott, to order a review last week of all substantiated cases of misconduct since 2000; he pledged to fire any teachers who had engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior.

The arrests began Feb. 6, when a teacher’s aide in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was charged with making videos of his sexual acts with children.

Then a teacher’s aide on the Upper West Side was arrested on sexual abuse charges after a male student told investigators that the man had him strip in the school’s lavatory and, at another point, offered money to fondle the boy.

On Feb. 16, a computer teacher in Queens with a history of inappropriately touching children was arrested on charges of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy.

And on Wednesday, word came that a substitute high school teacher in the Bronx had been arrested on charges that he twisted a 16-year-old male student’s nipples on Feb. 10.

Pedophile jailed for ten years for abusing child

A man who sexually abused a young boy and hoarded almost 3,500 child pornography images has been jailed for ten years.

Dennis Eldridge, 47, was caught when the victim, who became physically sick with stress, told his parents of the abuse. The child reported that Eldridge abused him over the course of several years when Eldridge visited his home. He was also abused when his family visited Eldridge’s home. He was less than ten years old at the time of the crimes.

Police raided Eldridge’s Pembroke home when the allegations surfaced and found thousands of photographs and videos of child pornography on his computers. They included images of bestiality and children as young as five years old being raped and forced into sex acts by adults.

Eldridge, who was employed in the field of computers and technology, also worked as a guitar teacher for the Bermuda School of Music.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke explained that 3,375 pornographic pictures and 92 video files were found on Eldridge’s home computers. She explained that in law, such images are categorized on a scale of one to five, with five being the most serious.

More than 3,000 of the images were level one. However, 176 of them were level four and one movie clip, involving a young girl and images of bestiality, was a category five.

Accused ex-Telfair school teacher appears in court

A former teacher at Telfair Elementary School was in court Wednesday amid child sex abuse accusations. Paul William Chapel, who taught third grade at the Pacoima school, appeared briefly in a San Fernando courthouse for a preliminary hearing.

Chapel is the fourth of what has now become five suspects all within the Los Angeles Unified School District to be charged with child sex abuse.

Most parents at Telfair Elementary School learned about the sex abuse charges facing Chapel on Friday. However, the investigation started last April and Chapel was arrested in October.

Many parents are furious at the principal and the district, saying they hid the allegations from them. As a result, two parents showed up for Chapel's hearing Wednesday because they say they don't trust the school to provide them with information anymore.

Chapel has pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of lewd acts on a child involving four victims - three girls and one boy. In one case, he's accused of picking up one of his students by the legs during class and kissing her on the neck and stomach.

Private School Molester Mira Admits Guilt

Former private school PE director Paul Mira, charged with sexual abuse of two students including a 12-year-old girl, has accepted a plea deal that makes him a sex offender for life, bans him from teaching, but keeps him from prison. The parents of the girls accepted the deal to keep their kids from having to testify.

Mira, 29, worked at Archimedean Middle-Conservatory – Archimedean Upper Conservatory in Miami. While teaching there in 2011, prosecutors say he had sex with a 17 year-old student and a 12-year-old student. He was arrested and charged with 7 different counts.

Mira was given 10 years probation in that case, and adjudication was withheld in the case involving the 12-year-old, but while he avoided a prison cell, he must surrender his teaching certificate, can never again be in charge of children or have unsupervised contact with children, must accept a curfew, must wear a GPS monitor, and faces up to 40 years in prison if he violates his probation. He will also be listed with the state as a registered sex offender, and can never have the charges erased from his record.

Parents of the two girls said both have been forced to change schools and seek counseling because of the relationship with Mira.

Ex-Pa. teacher gets prison for child porn cache

Former teacher and youth soccer coach, David Rinke II, 40, warned by northwestern Pennsylvania school officials about taking pictures of students' groin areas during athletic events will spend nearly 20 years in prison for collecting and trading more than 57,000 images of child pornography.

Rinke taught 10th-grade science at the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, a magnet school in the Erie School District, before he was arrested in February 2011.

Rinke was arrested by the FBI after an undercover agent in Arizona found images from a computer account traced to Rinke.

Public Defender Patton argued that Rinke deserved some credit for his work in the community, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian Trabold argued that Rinke grossly abused his trust as a teacher and did the other community work merely to put him in closer proximity to children.

"When a teacher, who should be nurturing and protecting children, entertains himself with child rape movies, it strikes at the very heart of the educational system," Trabold wrote. "A man who amused himself by watching defenseless kids be raped and humiliated and then traded that filth with others, surely was not trying to make Erie a better place to live."

Christian school teacher arrested in child sex abuse case

A teacher at a private school in Montgomery County has been charged with sexually abusing a student, age 16, who alleged the two had a sexual relationship for more than a year.

Ashley Jean Campbell, 27, who taught at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of committing a fourth-degree sex offense.

Ken Fentress, chancellor of the school, said administrators immediately contacted police after they were alerted to the inappropriate relationship last week.

Police said school officials received an anonymous email on Feb. 3 alleging a sexual relationship between Campbell and a male student.

Detectives spoke with the student, and police said he told them that he had been involved in a sexual relationship with Campbell since the fall of 2010. He was 16 years old when the sex started, police said. The relationship ended last month, police said.

A school spokesman said Campbell was fired this week and no longer teaches at Montrose Christian, a school of 200 students in grades K-12.

Four more victims in child molester case

A Missouri elementary school teacher has been accused of sexual abuse by four more victims, and now faces eight felony charges, police say.

Matthew H. Nelson, 33, taught second and third grade for 10 years at Prairie Branch Elementary School in Grain Valley before being accused of sexual abuse last month. He had been charged for four incidents dating back to Aug. 1, 2010; however, new accusations made Wednesday predate that time, stemming from alleged incidents in 2009. Nelson pleaded not guilty to the original charges Jan. 25.

Nelson faces five felony counts of first-degree child molestation. Court documents say the victims were all boys ages 7 to 9. Allegations of inappropriate touching involving a girl are also on record, but no charges have yet been filed.

Ossining Man Convicted of Child Sexual Abuse

Croton kung fu instructor Frank DeMaria, 68, of Ossining was convicted Tuesday of sexually abusing four young girls.

According to the DA, adults initially reported to Croton Police that they saw the defendant take the young students into a corner and watches as the defendant’s gyrated his hips.

Female victims then told investigators that the defendant instructed them, on more than one occasion, to grab his penis and to squeeze and pull it repeatedly.

According to the DA, the defendant is an internationally-known grand master instructor who owned and operated a kung fu studio in Croton-on-Hudson. The victims were students and the incidents took place between Nov. 1,2009 and Jan. 6, 2011 at the studio, the DA said.

DeMaria was arrested by Croton Police on Jan. 14, 2011. The defendant, who was remanded after the verdict, faces a maximum of seven years in state prison on each of the top counts when he is sentenced on May 8.

Former Valley Home school official must stand trial in sex abuse

A Stanislaus County Superior Court judge on Tuesday ruled there's enough evidence for a former rural school district administrator to stand trial on charges of sexually abusing two children.

Thomas Kevin Hart, 59, is accused of two counts of the continuous sexual abuse of a child younger than 14.

Hart was the Valley Home Joint School District Superintendent Principal when he was arrested July 6. The Valley Home school board placed Hart, who also is known as Kevin Hart, on unpaid compulsory leave in August.

The alleged victims in this case are children who did not attend Valley Home schools. The school board has since hired a new superintendent-principal.

The criminal complaint alleges that the abuse took place from Aug. 1, 2009, to June 17, 2011. Testimony in Hart's preliminary hearing on Tuesday indicated that the acts were alleged to have occurred at Hart's Oakdale home as he was bathing the children, a girl and a boy, in a laundry room sink.

Deputy DA Beth O’Hara Owen argued that a nurse, who is trained to conduct forensic exams of alleged sexual assault victims, found cuts and bruises on the children’s bodies that indicate sexual abuse had occurred. She said Hart told an investigator he penetrated the children with a fingertip to clean them.

Hart is scheduled to return to court Feb. 21 for an arraignment hearing. The defendant remains free on $250,000 bail as he awaits his trial.

Miramonte Elementary School to shut down and replace all staff
- UPDATE of 2/2/2012 article

Miramonte Elementary School will be closed for two days in the wake of sex crime allegations involving two teachers.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy announced Monday night that 88 teachers and 40 staff members will be replaced when classes resume Thursday. He told parents that faculty and staff will be reassigned to a site that does not host students, and that many or all may return when the investigation is completed.

In the interim, each classroom will be staffed with a rigorously screened teacher, as well as a psychiatric social worker. The teachers’ union, United Teachers Los Angeles, says it supports the district’s decision.

Deasy says the district plans to interview every student who has attended the school and every adult who has worked there. The investigation, he says, will be overseen by an independent commission chaired by a former California Supreme Court associate justice.

Mark Berndt, 61, was arrested Jan. 30 and charged with 23 counts of lewd acts on a child. He was removed from the classroom one year prior.

Fellow Miramonte teacher Martin Springer, 49, was arrested Friday after two of his former students told police they were fondled in his classroom. Springer, who is being held on $2 million bail, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

2010 Music Educator of the Year, sued for allegedly molesting student

A longtime teacher at Hamilton High School’s music magnet program has been accused of sexually molesting at least four students in the mid-1990s through 2010 and is being sued by one former student, according to court documents and a police report.

Vance Miller, 59, was a well-known and respected teacher at Hamilton Music Academy Magnet for 17 years and has taught in the district for more than 35 years since his start as a substitute teacher in 1975. He taught at Loyola Performance Arts Magnet for 15 years prior to Hamilton, according to district records.

In 2010, Miller was selected as Southern California’s Outstanding Music Educator of the Year. Later that year, on Sept. 13, Miller was pulled out of his class and reassigned to the local district offices but not placed on administrative leave, according to L.A. Unified documents. Parents weren’t told why the head of the orchestra was gone and a substitute was in his place. And yet, Miller is still currently listed on the school’s website as teaching five courses.

The alleged victim in the lawsuit is identified as John Doe, now 31 years old. The then 13-year-old boy engaged in a roughly four-year sexual relationship that included “kissing, fondling of genitals, masturbation, oral sex and anal sex,” the complaint states.

The complaint also alleges Miller regularly kissed other students on the lips in class, rubbed up against them, took students individually with him to a local gym and showered naked with them.

Because of the statute of limitations, criminal charges were not filed against Miller, according to the police report and attorney Anthony De Marco, who represents the alleged victims. He said the civil suit goes to trial in August. There is no amount yet stated for damages sought.

De Marco said two other students have come forward and that he expects there may be more. He said Miller’s behavior showed a “pattern” of abuse and that a “culture of permissiveness” allowed these actions to continue.

“There are multiple kids who don’t know each other, who have no connection to each other, who are coming forward,” De Marco said.

More Victims come forward after teacher’s arrest made public
- UPDATE of 2/1/2012 article

More students are coming forward to claim that they have been victimized by former teacher Mark Berndt after his arrest on Monday, reports the Los Angeles Times. Their willingness to come forward so quickly after the news broke casts an even darker shadow on the Los Angeles School District's decision to keep school parents out of the loop when Berndt was dismissed in January 2011.

Los Angeles Superintendent John Deasy is now investigating students’ claims as more school officials wonder how Berndt could have carried on undetected for all those years.

On Monday, Berndt was arrested on allegations that he bound and gagged students at Miramonte Elementary School, placed live cockroaches on their faces and fed them his own semen on spoons and in cookies.

His habit of photographing what the children described as a "game" is what aroused the suspicions of a photo technician at a Redondo Beach CVS, who turned the pictures over to Redondo Beach police in the fall of 2010. By December, the case was being investigated by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, and by January 2011, Mark Berndt was out of the classroom.

Deasy insists that he barred Berndt from the classroom as soon as he heard of the investigation against him. But for the parents at Miramonte Elementary school, it simply wasn't enough. A forum between parents, school administrators and investigators erupted into anger when Deasy said that the district handled Berndt's case according to police procedure.

Ex-KinderCare Teacher Pleads Guilty To Child Sex Assault

Paul Kerr, 33, a former lead teacher at KinderCare, located at 5472 S. Federal Circle in Littleton, was arrested on April 14, 2011. He was charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child.

Paul James Kerr, 33, pleaded guilty on Dec. 2 to a felony charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and two misdemeanor counts of sexual contact/peeping Tom, according to court records. On the sexual assault guilty plea, Kerr faces a potential sentence range of four years to life in prison. He could also be sentenced to intensive-supervised sex offender probation.

Court documents indicated that school officials became aware of a possible assault at KinderCare after a 9-year-old girl told her parents, who notified the school.

After Kerr was arrested and read his Miranda rights, records show, he agreed to a police interview in which he admitted to touching a 9-year-old girl while she was undressed. Kerr stated he did it to check the girl for marks of abuse, according to an arrest affidavit, but then later admitted he did it for sexual gratification.

During that same interview, Kerr said he would place a 5-year-old girl on his lap during nap time and would tickle her to become aroused, the affidavit said.

Kerr admitted that on three occasions, he walked into the bathroom when a 10-year-old student was changing out of her school uniform into her regular clothes so he could become sexually aroused, the affidavit said.

During the investigation by the Littleton Police Department, police said four other parents reported similar concerns about Kerr.

$23 Million Bond Set for Teacher accused of Bondage Photos of kids

Bond was set at $23 million Wednesday for a Los Angeles elementary school teacher, Mark Berndt, 61, who allegedly took bondage photos of more than two dozen students in his classroom -- $1 million for each of the 23 counts he faces of lewd acts on a child.

The 400 photographs collected by investigators include some showing suspected semen-filled spoons at the children's mouths, a sheriff's investigator said.

The probe started when a film processor gave investigators "over 40 photographs depicting children in a school classroom, with their eyes blindfolded and mouths covered with tape," a Los Angeles County Sheriff's statement said.

"Investigators learned that some of the photos depicted suspect Mark Berndt with his arm around the children, or with his hand over their mouths," it said. Other photos showed "children with large live Madagascar-type cockroaches on their faces and mouths."

Investigators, who interviewed more than 80 current and former students and school employees, identified 23 boys and girls then between the ages of 7 and 10 years old as alleged victims in crimes that are believed to have been committed between 2005 and 2010, the statement said.

About 10 children seen in the more than 400 images have not yet been identified, they said. The investigation began more than a year ago, officials said. "Early in the investigation, Special Victims Bureau detectives recovered a blue plastic spoon and an empty container from the trash within the suspect's classroom," the sheriff's statement said. "The recovered items tested positive for semen." The arrest came soon after lab testing matched Berndt's DNA with semen found on the spoon, Scott said.

Berndt was a teaching assistant in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1976 and 1977, and he began teaching at Miramonte Elementary School in 1979.

Berndt’s next court appearance was set for February 21. He could face life in prison if convicted.

Man pleads guilty to numerous sex attacks on children

An Edmonton-area man has pleaded guilty to more than a decade of sexual abuse of minors, including his son and daughter.

The 41-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims, entered guilty pleas to 27 of the 40 charges against him, including charges of sexual touching, child pornography, unlawful confinement, incest and bestiality.

The man’s victims included his son, his daughter, the daughter of a girlfriend and two daughters of a fiancee. Four of five victims were minors at the time of the abuse. The crimes stretched from 1999 until 2010, according to an agreed statement of facts heard by the court.

The man’s daughter told police of sexual abuse that started when she was six years old, though she didn’t recognize it as abuse until she was 11. When she was 11, her father ordered her and her 10- year-old brother to have sex. Her father had intercourse with her. There were numerous instances of abuse in the following years.

The siblings were afraid to tell anyone of their fathers’ crimes and both attempted suicide as a direct result of the abuse.

He is scheduled to face trial on March 12.

Closing arguments given in civil trial of alleged sex abuse at day care

Closing arguments were given today in the civil trial against a Miami day care center where the alleged sex abuse of a 5-year-old girl happened in 2008.

The family of the alleged victim is seeking $25 million claiming Discover Day Care Inc. was negligent in not having adults supervise children at the center at all times.

"If someone says to you, that's too much money for one person, you say that's too much pain for a 5-year old," said attorney Jeff Herman.

"She's being raped and she doesn't even know what sex is," Herman added.

During the trial, the alleged victim testified that the teacher told her class that a 13-year-old boy, her son, was in charge during nap time while she went out to lunch. During that time she said the boy sexually abused her.

The defense says the incident never happened, and the alleged abuser, now a 17-year-old, flatly denied doing anything inappropriate with the girl.

"Did anyone at the school ever see her traumatized, crying, complaining, acting out? No," said defense lawyer Don Hardeman.

The boy pleaded no-contest to the sexual abuse charges in the criminal case and was sentenced to counseling, but the jury was not told that information.

Three of the boy’s therapist did testify that he admitted to his behavior as part of his counseling. “He admits to touching her vagina,” said one of his therapists.

At one point in the trial the teacher testified that that she had written a note claiming the girl had told her she had asked boy to touch her private parts. But attorneys for victim produced attendance records showing that the girl was absent on the day that the teacher alleges that conversation took place.

“You did not speak to (the victim) on June 20 did you?” the lawyer asked.

“I don’t remember,” the teacher said.

Child Sex Crimes Trial Grinds to a Halt

The trial of a former deputy head teacher who faced historical child abuse charges, ground to a halt today as the jury could not agree on a verdict.

David Griffiths, 50, of Thistlecroft Gardens in Stanmore, has been on trial at Wood Green Crown Court for eight counts of indecency with a child and one count of serious sexual assault. He has denied the charges throughout.

Today the jury could not agree on a verdict, and so the case has come to a standstill. The case has been adjourned until January 20. Griffiths also faced an additional charge of indecency with a child, but was found not guilty by the jury of this allegation at a hearing on Friday January 6.

Griffiths worked at several schools during his career which began in September 1987, including Broadfields Primary School in Barnet, Edgware Junior School, Frith Manor Primary School, also in Barnet, and Weald Junior School in Harrow.

The offences were alleged to have happened between 1991 and 1993 in more than one location, including a school, which cannot be named, and the Welsh Harp Boating Lake.

Griffiths, who is married, was a long running volunteer for Greater London and Middlesex West Scouts, having been rewarded for more than 30 years service including a role as a district commissioner.

He also had a voluntary role in child protection at a local church, as well as assisting with a range of other projects at the church.

Longtime Ala Teacher Arrested on Child Sex Abuse Charges

An Alabama school teacher was jailed on charges of sexually abusing a fourth-grade female student, and police said Thursday the man told them he molested more than 20 other girls over his 25-year career.

Alabaster police said Daniel Montague Acker Jr., 49, was charged with three counts of sexual abuse, and additional charges were possible. "This is not a one-time event," said Deputy Chief Curtis Rigney. "This happened over a period of 25 years."

Acker taught fourth grade at three schools and drove buses in the Shelby County school system from 1985 until he retired in 2009. He was investigated on similar allegations in 1992, but grand jurors did not return an indictment, said Rigney.

A girl who is now 12 or 13 came forward within the last week claiming Acker molested her around 2009, when he was a teacher at Thompson Intermediate School, Rigney said. He wouldn't say what drove the girl to go to police.

At least one instance of alleged abuse occurred in a classroom in front of other students, Rigney said, but it wasn't clear whether the children saw anything or realized what had happened.

Acker remained on the school payroll as a substitute bus driver until this week, Rigney said. Acker's father, Dan M. Acker, is a longtime commissioner in Shelby County, just south of Birmingham, but Rigney said there was no indication his father's position helped the teacher avoid charges earlier.

Shelby County schools spokeswoman Cindy Warner said Acker was placed on leave while child abuse allegations were investigated in October 1992, and the county school board voted against firing him in February 1993 after grand jurors did not indict him. She said Acker was reinstated as a fourth-grade teacher at Creek View Elementary, where he worked before moving to Thompson Intermediate.

In a statement, Superintendent Randy Fuller said the district was cooperating with police and would no longer use Acker as a substitute bus driver or in any other capacity.

Confronted by police, Acker admitted molesting the girl who went to officers. He also told investigators he had abused more than 20 other girls but did not name any alleged victims, Rigney said. Acker is no longer cooperating with investigators, he said.

Investigators believe most if not all of the girls were in Acker's classes, Rigney said. But police are trying to see if some of the girls were students in other teachers' classrooms.

Acker's arrest stunned residents in the Birmingham suburb of 28,000, where he was well-known for his long teaching career.

Waterville teacher accused of sexually abusing girl

The Waterville teacher accused of sexually abusing a girl under the age of 11 during the course of several years is now headed to trial for the accused crimes. David Lemery was in Oneida County Court in Utica on Thursday and his attorney said they do not plan on accepting a guilty plea in this case. At Lemery's previous court appearance, it was stated that Lemery and his attorney would return December 22 to decide whether or not to pursue a psychiatric defense. However, nothing of that was mentioned at the December 22 appearance. Lemery is a Physical Education teacher at Waterville Central School and has been on paid administrative leave since first being charged.

Lemery has been charged with two counts of first-degree sexual conduct against a child, and two counts of the same charge in the second degree. The charge states that the offense had to have happened twice over the duration of 3 months. In December, Lemery's attorney waived a hearing to suppress certain statements Lemery made to authorities, but reserve the right to discuss their relevance or whether they might be prejudiced. Over the summer, the Oneida County District Attorney's office extended a plea offer to Lemery, but he rejected it. The details of that offer have not been disclosed at this time. Lemery remains out of custody on $15,000 cash bail or bond, and the judge set a trial date of March 5.

Pedophile Teacher Wins Appeal

Convicted pedophile Ian Appleton, a retired accountant and school teacher, has won his appeal against a five-year jail sentence for sexually abusing an eight-year-old boy three years ago.

A full bench of the Western Cape High Court set aside the sentence on Tuesday, and ordered that he instead be sentenced to correctional supervision involving a short period of imprisonment, and that he then be released into house arrest.

Judges Daniel Dlodlo and Vincent Saldanha referred the case back to the Paarl Regional Court, for magistrate Norma Smile to decide the period of imprisonment, and the duration of Appleton's house arrest.

The sentence is likely to outrage anti-child-abuse pressure groups who attended Appleton's trial and appeal proceedings.

Appleton, 74, who performed oral sex on the boy in 2008, was convicted last month of rape under the new Children's Act.

At his trial, it emerged that Appleton had developed a long-standing close friendship with the boy's parents, which gave him unlimited access to the boy.

The judges said the magistrate had considered correctional supervision inappropriate, due to the seriousness of the offence.

They said Appleton was currently receiving rehabilitative therapy for pedophilia, and had undertaken to continue with the treatment at his own expense.

This would ensure Appleton was properly managed, monitored and rehabilitated, to enable him to assume accountability and responsibility for his condition, the judges said.

They said State advocate Mornay Julius, in opposing the appeal, had referred to the scourge of sexual abuse of children, and the impunity with which it happens “almost on a daily basis”.

The judges said correctional supervision should not be regarded as a “light sentence”, as it served the specific purpose of rehabilitation.

If the offender failed to strictly comply with the restrictive conditions applicable to correctional supervision, the offender would be brought back to court to be sentenced afresh.

Indiana Teacher Accused of Molesting Special Education Students

An Indiana teacher is facing six felony charges after allegedly having relationships with three female students, two of which were enrolled in special education classes.

Samuel Fies, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with multiple counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, child molestation, criminal confinement, child solicitation and attempted child seduction, the Associated Press reports. Fies allegedly developed a relationship with a female student at Highland High School, where he was most recently employed as a teacher, in 2009, when the girl was in seventh grade and under age 14.

According to the affidavit, Fies made the girl sit at the front of his seventh-grade social studies classroom and often found excuses to rub up against her, the Indiana Post-Tribune reports. Fies is accused of molesting her on at least two occasions, one of which occurred while she was locked in an athletic office. Fies served as a coach of the track and cross country team before he was fired in late November on the grounds of misconduct.

Fies reportedly contacted a second student, 13, through a MySpace account and text messages, asking her to do sexually explicit things and send him photos, the Northwest Indiana Times reports. The student told police after a phone conversation that the man she met online sounded like her social studies teacher.

The third alleged victim, a 17-year-old student at Highland High School with emotional and learning disabilities, reported that she met a man on a dating site who asked her sexually-charged questions under a screen name police traced to Fies, according to the Times.

Fies faces a maximum 20-year prison sentence, the Post-Tribune reports. He is awaiting trial in Lake County Jail.

Alleged Molestation Victims Speak out about their molestation experience by former teacher and coach

On the heels of two well-publicized national cases of child sexual abuse by coaches, some local men who say they were victims of alleged abuse by a coach are speaking out.

The men told NewsChannel 9 the abuse started while they were at Ooltewah Middle School in the 1980's. They're grown now and speaking out, hoping their story will help others find the courage to come forward as well.

"It's something that we dealt with in 6, 7, and 8 grade. Again, it's something that's come out with Syracuse and Penn State," Andy Ellington, who says he was molested, told us.

In fact, Ellington denied the abuse at first too. "I didn't want people to know. I definitely didn't want anyone to know at Ooltewah. I didn't want my mother to know. My mother was a single mom. My father died when I was 7. So this was something I did not want her to have to deal with," he said.

He says he was just 11 years old the first time anything happened and says he lost count of how many times he was allegedly molested by Stan Evans, a former teacher and coach at Ooltewah Middle School. Evans was close with many of his athletes and Ellington says he and others frequently spent the night at his home.

"The majority of the time, the real, if you were to call it fondling and things like that, was always off school premises. But I can't even imagine how many conduct unbecoming on school premises there were," Ellington said, recalling those difficult memories.

Michael Mercer says he's one of Evan's victims, too. He didn't want to speak on camera but explained to WGOW today, how the abuse started with Evans rubbing his shoulders.

"So then it goes from rubbing the shoulders, to a kiss on the forehead. Then it goes from a kiss on the forehead, to lets see how fast you can get undressed. Then lets pop your naked bottom," Mercer said.

Mercer and Ellington, along with two other men, filed a lawsuit against Evans in 1999 claiming they were molested on multiple occasions. However, the statute of limitations was up and Evans abruptly resigned from OMS and moved to Florida. Since then, they've been trying to heal and both hope their story can spare other kids the same experience.

"I do hope that the Hamilton County Board of Education will have an opportunity to have some kind of a standard operation procedure in place, to where if they do have these issues, it'll be taken care of without being swept under the rug. I can assure you in '98 it was," Ellington said. Ellington says he feels like he's healed from this mostly thanks to family and his church.

But he says, even with that, he still doesn't have closure with Coach Evans and he hopes hearing his story will help someone who's been through a similar situation. We tried to contact Evans to get his side of the story, but were unable to find any contact information for him.

Head Teacher sacked from school where teacher sexually abused children

A head teacher at a school where a member of staff sexually abused a series of young children has been sacked.

Hillside First School teacher Nigel Leat was jailed indefinitely earlier this year after it was discovered the 52-year-old had filmed himself sexually assaulting pupils as young as six in the classroom.

Chris Hood, the head teacher at the school in Worle when Leat was committing his horrific crimes, was suspended in January pending a disciplinary inquiry into the leadership and management of the school and this week North Somerset Council confirmed he had been dismissed from his post.

The council stressed Mr Hood had not been accused of any criminal involvement, and that his dismissal did not indicate that he was party to Leat's activities. During the court case, the prosecution said that Leat was devious, manipulative and acted alone.

Parents received a short letter this week, telling them Mr Hood had "left the employment" of the Church Road school. A serious case review being carried out independently into school procedures is expected to end shortly and there will be a briefing for parents ahead of the publication of the results.

After Leat was sentenced, Avon and Somerset Police revealed that more victims had come forward.

It is thought that over his 15 years as a teacher at Hillside, Leat may have assaulted up to 40 victims.

Bristol Crown Court heard earlier this year that the father-of-two, from Brislington, had been abusing pupils as long ago as 1998, with the officer who led the investigation describing Leat's offences as "some of the worst and most sickening we have ever seen".

Leat – who pleaded guilty to 36 charges – was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection on the basis he posed a significant risk of causing serious physical or psychological harm to other young girls. He admitted a total of 32 offences against five girls at the school between September 2006 and July 2010.

The crimes were one count of attempted rape, eight sexual assaults by penetration and 23 further sexual assaults.

Leat also admitted charges of voyeurism; causing or inciting a child aged under 13 to engage in a sexual act; possessing more than 30,000 indecent photographs and movies of children, and possessing extreme pornography.

Local Teacher Suspected of Having Child Porn

A San Diego man who taught at a Chula Vista elementary school was arrested Friday on suspicion of possessing child pornography. Gary Delaney Phillips, 54, who teaches at Clear View Elementary School, was taken into custody at his home about 8:30 a.m., according to the FBI.

Phillips became a focus of investigations after an FBI agent discovered email messages in which the suspect "expressed a sexual interest in children and indicated that he possessed images of child pornography," according to the bureau. A search of Phillips' residence allegedly turned up images depicting minors engaging in sexual activities, officials said.

Phillips was been booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego. He was expected to appear before a federal judge early next week. Phillips has taught in the Chula Vista Elementary School District for more than 20 years. Phillips has been placed on paid administrative leave.

California Principal Accused of Molesting 7 Girls
- Update of 7/20/2011 article

Robert Benson Adams, 60, the owner and principal of the Creative Frontiers School in Citrus Heights, a middle-class suburb about 20 miles northeast of Sacramento, was arrested Wednesday on charges that he fondled at least seven girls over the past 15 years, months after he was accused of touching female students under their clothes. It was shut down in mid-July after a complaint was filed by the California Department of Social Services.

Adams now faces six felony counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts on children under 14 and one misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting a child under 18, according to a criminal complaint filed in Sacramento County Superior Court.

The girls, who were between 4 and 7, told investigators that Adams, known as "Mr. Bob" to his students, often called them into his office, where he would pull them onto his lap and fondled them, according to the complaint. Citrus Heights Police Chief Christopher Boyd said more witnesses have come forward since July and that the most recent crime occurred this June. "We took the time that was necessary to find the facts and the truth that has resulted in these charges being filed today," Boyd said.

Two teachers separately told investigators they walked in on Adams touching young girls. A teacher at the school, said she saw Adams put his hand under the skirt of a young girl who was sitting on his lap in his office in 2007, according to the complaint. It did not say whether she reported the incident then.

A preschool teacher, who was listed as a staff member on the school's website before it was closed, told investigators she came back from her lunch break one day in June to find Adams lying on a mat next to a 4-year-old during nap time. The child's shirt had been pulled up and Adams was rubbing her stomach, according to the complaint. The girl's parents told Thompson the next day that their daughter said Adams had touched her inappropriately.

Adams could face up to eight years in a state prison for each of the six felony counts if he is convicted. He could also face a fine of up to $5,000 and at least a year in a county jail if convicted on the misdemeanor charge. He returns to court on October 7.

Australian Police Make Arrests After Online
Child Abuse Network Busted

Australian police have carried out a world-first bust on a sophisticated online child abuse network, arresting 11 men in four states and rescuing two abused children. Covert police operatives spent four months infiltrating the network, secretly taking the place of those they arrested to allow them to delve deeper into the group of men aged between 26 and 67 who were sharing images and videos of the sexual abuse of children as young as four. The organization, which used complex "peer-to-peer" software rather than a traditional central server to make it harder for law enforcement agencies to uncover the material, is the first of its kind closed down by the multinational Virtual Global Task force, chaired by the Australian Federal Police.

The men, many of whom had direct access to children on a daily basis, included a teacher, IT specialist, security worker and a convicted sex offender, as well as a farmer. Two young children were removed from the custody of a 26-year-old NSW man, whose identity was suppressed, and he was charged with having sexual intercourse with a child under 10. Parents and students at the exclusive King's School were in shock after it was revealed long-term preparatory school teacher Gregory John Coupland, 40, from Forestville in Sydney's northern beaches, was among the men. Coupland, who had taught at the school for 12 years and was master in charge of snow sports, taking groups of primary-aged children on regular multi-day skiing trips, was also running a scout troop until he was charged last month with using a carriage service to access child pornography, using a carriage service to transmit child pornography and possessing child abuse material.

King's Preparatory School head Keith Dallywater said that the news had come "as a significant shock" but confirmed that no students had been harmed in any way. Six of the men were from NSW, three from Victoria, and one each from Queensland and South Australia. AFP manager of hi-tech investigations Commander Grant Edwards said, while Operation Danton had been a success, police were aware of other child abuse networks using the same file sharing service and forensic searches were ongoing.

"The images accessed are of real children being abused and it's a shocking thing," Commander Edwards said.
